On Belief #14
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus Got up and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. (Mark 1:35)
Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. (Luke 6:12)
At a solitary place, on the mountain top, on the sea, at Gethsemane, we see a solitary shadow filling in the deep gap between the heavens and the earth. Standing up or kneeling down; at dawn or in the night. The shadow deeply filled in! Behold! The heavens and the earth spin to a huge whirlpool rushing toward him!Xa tiny little point far, far away. The little point breaks the limitation of time and space and enters the other side of the heavens.
This is the time to present himself to God; far away from the world, all by himself, even his dearest disciples had to keep a distance from him. Isn't that true? Every single piece of grass has its own root; every single sunflower faces the sun all alone. Primitive wind blows primitive soul; twisted path does not lead to belief. As St. Tomas once prayed: Oh Lord. When I come to you, may all wise men shut up; may all creatures keep quiet. May you and you only speak to me one on one, so that in absolute tranquillity I can hear the tiny voice of your spirit breezing through my heart.
This is the sweetest time, as if we were sitting around the fireplace in a snowy night, as if a baby child leaning against its mother's bosom. It is the atmosphere filled with fragrance and the mind preoccupied with tranquillity. I don't even want to think about the worldly burdens like mountains or worldly noise like the seas, shaking in the storms. Oh Lord! I wish this would last forever. I wish I would continue to be a child in your bosom and I wish I would never have to go back to the world and be forced to live like a grownup.
I called upon you because I want to send you, said the Lord. You must take the challenge. You must carry the Cross and walk in the footprint of Jesus till you reach the twilight over the Pacific. This is your life. Your life is destined to be pale. Pray! Do not think too much; just pray! Like Jesus, all weaknesses are power; all sufferings are glory; all sacrifices are life; and on the other side of the ocean all blood and tears are the morning sunlight!
